On the weekend of 24th March, members of clubs in Area 2, District 22, met in Maryborough for the 2023 Area Meeting. The venue was the Maryborough Services Club in Lennox Street. Members of the Maryborough Club had prepared a full program for Saturday which began with a welcome address from Maryborough Club President Michelle Byrne.
During Saturday morning, presentations by District 22 Governor Lyn Agnew and District 22 Foundation for Women Ambassador Anne Beulah were well received and Lt. Governor Petra Ladwig delivered a presentation on Membership. Other presentations during the morning were by the Gladstone Club and the Maryborough Club.
A very interesting presentation by Detective Sergeant Melonie Geck of the QPS Child Protection and Investigation Unit, captured all members attention. The morning agenda ended with the Principal of the Maryborough State High School giving an overview of his time as a principal of a large secondary school.
The afternoon session began with a presentation by Jane Reid, the Convention 24 Communications Coordinator, who gave an update on the upcoming 2024 Convention to be held at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in South Bank. A panel of local businesswomen also gave members the opportunity to hear of their experiences in the workplace.
Saturday evening Guest Speaker, Immigration Lawyer Dr Brian Kelliher, told why he had followed a career of immigration law, and spoke of his many experiences along the way during a Question/Answer type interview. His career spanned the years when many ‘illegal migrants’ came to Australia by boat. Over the years Dr Kelliher has also spent a lot of his time in pro bono work.
Sunday brought a more relaxed atmosphere with Hervey Bay Club and Rockhampton Club giving their club presentations. President Trish Collins presented for the Rockhampton Club and spoke about the recent ‘by invitation’ Networking Evenings which the club has held, featuring the quest for new members. So far, the first evening resulted in one new member and the second promises seven new members.
The completion of the large floor jigsaw puzzle by members (Zonta – a Work in Progress) was achieved on Sunday morning. Club photos were taken, and a final thank you was given to all who had organized the program for the weekend. An enjoyable lunch ended an enjoyable weekend.
