About Us

Welcome to Zonta Club of Townsville Inc. The Zonta Club of Townsville Inc. is a dedicated group of women who are committed to empowering women in the Townsville area through various service and advocacy initiatives. The Zonta Club of Townsville Inc is one of two Zonta Clubs in Townsville.

We are proud to announce that in 2024, we took great joy in celebrating our club’s 40th Birthday.

Service

Our club is proud of its commitment to supporting women in our local community and abroad.

At a local level, we support our community by providing:

  • Basic household items for inclusion in the Independent Living Kits distributed through Sera’s Women’s Shelter
  • Personal Hygiene Items distributed through the Inpatient Youth Mental Health Unit
  • Packs of personal items such as shampoo, conditioner, soap etc distributed through the Domestic Violence Resource Centre
  • Provision of Domestic Violence Support Number posters which are distributed throughout public toilets in the Townsville Region. These posters detail services available for people experiencing domestic and family violence.
  • Provision of Zonta Breast Cancer Care Cushions.

At an international level, each year we purchase and pack hundreds of birthing kits from Birthing Kits Australia. These vital kits make a life saving difference to the lives of women who do not have access to medical facilities in countries all over the globe.

Advocacy Initiatives

Four Focus Areas

The four key focus areas for Zonta are listed below.

  • Eliminating Violence against women – Zonta Says NO!
  • Climate Justice – Zonta Says NOW!
  • Women in Decision-making – Zonta Says YES!
  • Education Equality – Zonta Says YES!

Our Four Shared Moments of Activism

The four key dates are as below:

  • 8th March – Joint day of celebration with International Women’s Day and Zonta Rose Day
  • 22nd April – Earth Day.
  • 10th October – International Day of the Girl
  • 25th November – 10th December – This covers the 16 Days of Activism and the Zonta Says NO campaign

  • At Zonta Club of Townsville, we are proud of our advocacy inititives and the positive effect it has on our community.  Some of our current projects are:

    ZONTA SAYS YES

Sponsorship of Queensland Virtual Stem Academy and 2 x Student Bursaries

Zonta Club of Townsville is very proud to support the QVSA.   QVSA fosters STEM projects for primary school children who may not have access to this level of learning. We are very excited to be able to offer two primary school children graduating into high school a $500 bursary by way of gift voucher which will allow them to purchase necessary equipment to continue their STEM journey through QVSA.

    Financial Literacy Workshops

Another very exciting project. The two local Zonta Clubs will be working in partnership with QCWA Rosslea and Magnetic Garbutt clubs to bring a series of financial literacy workshops to all women. This initiative came from the QCWA proposition paper – Finding A Better Way. Keep an eye out for the events on our events page.

This is the first collaboration of it’s kind for us but we look forward to many more

    Zonta Says NO

    16 Days of Advocacy

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is one of Zonta Club of Townsville Inc’s key advocacy initiatives, aligning with Zonta International’s global campaign to end violence against women and girls. Each year, our club participates in local and regional activities to raise awareness, educate the community, and promote meaningful action to create safer lives for women. This campaign is an integral part of our advocacy work because it amplifies Zonta’s mission at both a local and global level—giving voice to those affected by violence, influencing positive change through collaboration, and reinforcing our ongoing commitment to equality, respect, and empowerment for all women.

This year we will be bringing you:

    • Small Actions : Big Impact.  – This is a video series talking to local women who take smaller everyday actions and which have a much larger outcome.
    • Past, Present & Future:  Where we have come from to where we see the future.  We will be talking to 3 influential local women on their take of their past work, how those works have brought us to the present day and where they see the future lying in the domestive, family and sexual space, from a feminist perspective.
    • Orange Lady displays.  Our displays at the Aitkenvale and Townsville Libraries represent a story of hope.  We will be telling the stories of how domestic, family and sexual violence has impacted many womens lives.  We will be showing the supports for those women who are able to seek help and we will be telling the stories of women who have successfully moved on to build success in their lives.

You will also see our “Zonta Says NO!” banners around town at strategic spots as well as out the front of the North Queensland Cowboys Reception area.

    Zonta Rose Day

Zonta Rose Day is celebrated on the  8th March each year, in conjunction with International Women’s Day.  This day celebrates and gives tribute to empowering women as well as celebrating their achievements , reflecting on Zonta’s work to improve the status of women worldwide, and honoring those who contribute to gender equality.

The day is symbolized by the yellow rose, which represents friendship.  The yellow rose was worn  and historically was a symbol of the suffragist movement. You can read more on that here
