Warwick rounds out 16 Days of Activism

Zonta Club of Warwick Inc had a very successful 16 days of activism this year with our information-bearing “Orange Lady” doing the rounds of local businesses and sports clubs. The Warwick Men’s Shed very kindly crafted our Orange Lady!

The 16 Days culminated in two very special events:  the Warwick Safe Haven/Zonta Club March and Candlelight Vigil and the Warwick Redbacks cricket match against the Colts (unfortunately we lost!).

Peace March and Candlelight Vigil – 9 December

This event was a joint initiative of Zonta Club and Warwick Safe Haven. We gathered by the river and were led in our peace march by members of the Warwick Thistle Pipe Band, as we marched to the riverside tent where we heard guest speakers including Zonta Club President Jacinta Fromm and Warwick Safe Haven President Bette Bonney. Then followed the very moving candle lighting ceremony where attendees were invited to light a candle and reflect on the impact of family and domestic violence on the community. Later the Warwick Hockey Club hosted refreshments.

Cricket Match – 10 December

Unfortunately although the Warwick Redbacks lost their match against the Colts, the team donated team-imposed fines incurred during the match as well as their game fees and money raised via a barbecue after the match to future services for domestic and family violence. They also had specially designed orange shirts for the match!

Redbacks Cricket Team captain, Tyhe Clarkson, has been very keen to be involved in Zonta Club of Warwick Orange Lady campaign to raise awareness of, and advocate for elimination of violence against women.

The Zonta banner and Orange Lady display was at Slade Park from 12.30 p.m. and for the duration of the cricket game. President, Jacinta Fromm, attended and did the coin toss.
