Rockhampton Z Club – First in District 16, 1985

The Zonta Club of Rockhampton is at present working to establish Z Clubs at High Schools in the Rockhampton area. This has revived an interest in the fact that there was a Z Club with a membership of 50 students, sponsored by the Rockhampton Zonta Club at the North Rockhampton State High School in early 1985. The Charter Dinner was held in May 1985. This was the first Z Club to be established in District 16, which at that time encompassed all of Australia and New Zealand.

The club received excellent press, television and radio coverage under the guidance of the school’s Deputy Principal, Zontian Adele Freeman. Activities included a toy drive for a local children’s home, participation in 2 walkathons, a talent quest for secondary school students and the members raised funds to donate a water well to Sri Lanka. It is unclear as to the length of time the club was operational, however it is thought at least till the end of 1986.

Below are some of the archival records of the activities of the club.
